Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Genesis 1:2
We’re all aware of situations that we would describe as chaotic, empty or dark. A common reaction to these situations is to turn away. Perhaps this is because we see little value in investing our time in them, or because we find them overwhelming, or because we don’t think of them as our problem. And ,each of these reactions can have legitimacy, depending upon the situation.
The alternative reaction is the to bring order to the chaos, to fill the emptiness, and to light the darkness. Humans have an innate desire to control and to bring order to the world, to see it flourish, and to see it brimming with value.
Before God began His creative work, there was nothing but chaos, emptiness, and darkness in the world. However, as God brooded over this state of affairs, He saw the potential for it to flourish.
Perhaps we need to look again at some of the difficult situations we face. Some of them may hold far greater potential than we ever dared imagine.
